Yuri Akiyama

Yuri Akiyama joined LESP in the fall of 2008 and teaches ESL and Global History support classes. Born and raised in Japan, Yuri first lived in the US when she was 16 as a Rotary Club Youth Exchange scholarship student. After college Yuri spent a year in Boston and worked in Tokyo for a non-profit before pursuing her graduate degree in New York. She has been teaching in NYC public schools since 2002. Yuri holds a B.A. in Political Science from Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, and a M.A. in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is licensed in teaching ESL (K-12) and in Social Studies (7-12.) Yuri enjoys reading, traveling, and walking in Prospect Park. She lives in Brooklyn with her two cats, Jackie and Millie.
